Camille walked the perimeter of the casino to get to their table. She observed the solemn faces, the expressions of some of the patrons who had imbibed too much and looked as though they needed to go to the restrooms, the chins resting on hands with boredom, the disgruntled gamblers whose aim it had been to win big on Christmas Eve.

‘Elsie,’ she said in a low voice when she reached them. Elsie looked up frowning. ‘Cecily, both of you...come with me.’

They pushed back their chairs and rose from the table.

‘Where we goin’? asked Elsie. ‘You got some booze stashed away somewhere?’

‘I just want you with me. You might be of some help. Safety in numbers.’ Elsie shrugged and pulled a face at Cecily as if to say, “What’s goin’ on now?”’
